Why did you pick this picture?
At the time I made this I had really been in a bad place with my art. I was constantly frustrated because I needed to do something new, not because my old stuff was bad but because I wanted to push myself and I really felt like I was out of ideas and this drawing led to an entire new style of working which Im trying to push right now.
Where did the idea come from?
Honestly I have no clue. I had banned myself from drawing for a couple days and just told myself to go out and just enjoy life because I had been putting way too much importance on my art and hadn’t been very good with realizing that art (while it may be be my passion) doesn’t determine self worth which in art can be kinda hard to remember a lot of the time. But anyway I finally sat down one day after feeling alot better and without thinking just started putting line down. I almost never fill up the entire page cuz I tend to be very detailed in my line work but with the brush pen I use now it all just filled up in less than an hour.
What does this art mean to you?
Well the entire time I was making this piece I didn’t realize until afterwards, but I had enjoyed the entire process so much. I felt like a kid experimenting with something new that he’s found. Every other piece I’ve done after this one has for the most part been as enjoyable and no sign of the frustration I felt before.
What can you tell us about yourself?
I go to school in San Francisco but had lived in Chicago all my life where I plan to move back to in the next year. I have to live in a city because theirs so much going on but I feel I’m able to sift through the mess and find what really beautiful about a place. I love being with friends and its something I always forget form time to time because ill get very invested in my work.
What more can you tell us about your art?
Its very different every couple months and always changing. I act like a filter for all the great artists that came before me and even the contemporaries today and certain small things about all their work stick with me (whether it be an idea or an actual visual thing, and through that I use what I want to portray in my art and sort of mesh it all up to come up with my own product. Music has to be playing constantly.
