Why did you pick this piece?
It’s one of the most honest pieces I’ve ever written and says a lot about a particular period in my life. It stands for all what I want my writing to be: vulnerable and brutally honest.
Where did the idea for this art come from?
I wrote this piece during one of the hardest summers of my life. I was really just trying to understand my illness at the time, and writing through all the doubts and apprehensions really helped me cope. So in all honesty, I just handpicked my thoughts and emotions and tried to knit them into a poem.
What does this art mean to you?
This poem was sort of the initiating point, after which I realised my love for writing. So it’ll always hold a really special place in my heart.
What can you tell us about yourself?
My name is Anika, and I’m a 17 year old high school student. I’m in my senior year of school now and will be moving on to college in a short couple of months. I’ve always had a very strange, almost cathartic relationship with writing. It’s helped me think through things that I fail to get a grip over. Even though it’s only been a year (give or take) since I’ve properly pursued it, it has become a big, almost essential part of my life.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I believe that for a piece of writing to be powerful, it doesn’t necessarily have to be complex. It can have the simplest of words and phrases and yet delve into the mysteries of human emotions and psyche. So with every piece of writing, I aim for just that. For it to be simple yet powerful.
