Why did you pick this picture?
I feel like this drawing demonstrates my style quite well – I love the simplicity of using black pen and, coupled with stippling, it allows me to achieve a lot of detail whilst still being quite minimalistic.
Where did the idea come from?
My nickname is Moon and it’s also the name of my art page so it seemed quite fitting to finally draw one! I also like to try and draw things I think would be a challenge for me and I felt drawing this without any pencil guides and trying to realistically depict the craters in the surface of the moon would be perfect for that.
What does this mean to you?
This piece is comprised of thousands of dots and was drawn in 15 minute breaks whilst I was revising for my university finals, so it really just reminds me that persevering with art and putting whatever free time I have into it is worth it and can end in a result I’m happy with.
What can you tell us about yourself?
My name’s Aamna and I’m a 23 year old newly qualified Pharmacist who is trying to develop as an artist. Art is something I’ve enjoyed doing all my life- my earliest memory of it was painting Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’ at the age of 5 in school. However, other than a few drawings here and there over the years and doodling in school and university, it’s not something I pursued seriously until last year. Since then, more than anything, it’s been a means for me to relax during my final year at university whilst allowing me to develop my skills and style and really make more out of a hobby I love.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I definitely believe that art doesn’t have to be incredibly complex or use the most specialist tools and I like to show this in my drawings- most of my favourite pieces are just created with a pen and paper. I love drawing in pen simply because it is something I always have at hand and allows me to draw wherever I am. There’s also a minimalism and simplicity in solely using pens and working freehand whether for linework, stippling or mandalas and, as you can’t erase mistakes, you have to work with them which I feel helps me develop much more as an artist.
