Why did you pick this picture?
I chose this painting that I did in acrylics because this is who I am as an artist. I lie somewhere between the abstract and the representational in a world that I like to create out of my own uniqueness and experiences.
Where did the idea for this art come from?
There were two major influences for this work. The first being the television show Once Upon a Time. I was inspired by this eerie essence that the show gave off. The second being the amazing layered drawings of artist Shane Salzwedel, an American artist whose works depict natural environments divorced from any usual surrounding or place in time. I adore the aesthetic to his drawings and the depth that he can create within these transparent layers.
What does this art mean to you?
Expression. Not only this art, but all the art I create is simply a self-expression of who I am and the processes going through my mind at that point in my life. I find art to be a means of explaining what I am thinking – no matter how weird or mundane.
What can you tell us about yourself?
Well, I am currently a fourth year student at the University of Toronto, graduating in June 2017. I am an acrylic painter and a kinetic sculptor. I love art and I see the potential for the rehabilitative methods that art could ensue. I plan on attending graduate school for art therapy and would love to pursue a career that allows me to share art with the world while its healing properties take a hold on people. I believe that art can heal.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I love to experiment and I try to delve into a little bit of everything – whether or not it is successful. I accept the flaws and use that as a strength to push myself to do and to create better art. I am always working on something new.
