Grandma 102 – jakebiggin

Why did you pick this picture?

This picture is of a painting I made if my Grandma when she was 102. She passed away shortly after I started this and the painting has kept me close to her

Where did the idea for this art come from?

There was something about observing someone who had lived 102 years. She’d outlived everyone she’d ever known and was living in a time which was not her own any more.

What does this art mean to you?

So much . My daughter was born the day after her funeral and my life at that moment spun on its axis. Working in the portrait has been an emotional journey.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I’m a father of two, a graduate of central st martins in london which is where I live and work. I make work on iPad, in oils and mixed media and I illustrate

What more can you tell us about your art?

Portraiture has always been one of my great loves. The human face is to me an endlessly fascinating subject. Aside from paintings, I’ve been creating a series called iCons ; portraits drawn in the iconic tradition , of modern celebrities on my iPad
