why did you pick this picture?
I chose this piece of art because it is the strongest reflection of what I hope to accomplish with my work, which is to create further awareness of nature and wildlife conservation as well as waste reduction. I chose this photo in particular to illustrate how the painting can be seen as an image in nature viewed through the leaf. Which also adds further emphasis on how wildlife (as well as people) depends on forests and nature.
where did the idea for this art come from?
I got the idea to start this type of art when I saw a painted leaf that was entirely covered in black and then had an image painted on top. I couldn’t help but think it was a waste to cover the entire leaf and saw a different opportunity. The idea for this piece in particular came after reading a book about the importance of Old Growth Forests and the unique environment they provide for a number of species. Spotted Owls serve as an indicator species for Old Growth Forests as they cannot live in any other environment. However due to continuous logging and habitat loss there are less then a dozen Spotted Owls left in the B.C. wild, which in turn means that the Old Growth Forests are also at risk. I wanted to create a strong piece of importance on a substrate that reflected the issue. By using a leaf, a small tree waste, and not a material created from the issue in point, newly cut trees.
what does this art mean to you?
This art is important to me because it encompasses several of my passions including art, nature, wildlife, and conservation.
what can you tell us about yourself?
I’ve only just recently graduated from my career program of choice, however my true passion is art and environmental awareness. I took some art in high school but mostly practiced on the side in my free time and have only recently gotten back into it after graduating college. I grew up in a northern rural community and am greatly influenced by the simple beauty and wonder of nature and wildlife.
what more can you tell us about your art?
My art as a whole is still very new for me. It has only been just a year since I painted my first leaf but I do hope that it can be used to create further conservation awareness. I also intend to have portions of the proceeds of the sales of any leaves to go to forestry and wildlife conservation efforts.
