Winter Forest – michelle.gazely

Why did you pick this picture?

I chose this painting because I love the light that I was able to capture with my paints.

Where did the idea for this art come from?

I’m inspired by the beauty of our rural property and road. I especially love winter here – the quiet beauty of the snow and the quality of light. This painting was part of a larger body of work titled, ’The Wilds of Walcott Road’. Each painting is a scene from our road, reflecting the changing seasons. ‘The Wilds of Walcott Road’ was on display at Smithers Art Gallery last summer.

What does this art mean to you?

It’s a reflection of the beauty of the landscape in which I live. It encompasses all of the best things about living here in winter.

What can you tell us about yourself?

Most of my life has been spent studying and creating visual art. I spent fifteen years working as a commercial photographer and graphic designer. We moved to the Bulkley Valley, a rural area in northern British Columbia, Canada in 2014. I was incredibly inspired by the gorgeous landscape and amazing art community. I began painting and following my dream of becoming a full time fine artist. I enjoyed my first gallery show last summer and I’ve sold a number of pieces. I also teach painting, drawing and children’s art classes at our local gallery. I love sharing my passion for art with others.

What more can you tell us about your art?

My art enables me to share how I view the world with you, the audience and hopefully connect with you in a meaningful way. I use a limited palette and I enjoy being surprised by the colours that I can create. I love how a single, simple brush stroke can indicate a rooftop or a tree. I’ve been experimenting and playing with new mediums, worrying less about the end result and enjoying the process. I recently bought a stack of linoleum to try my hand at linocut, a printmaking process I tried twenty five years ago but want to explore more. Art making has endless possibilities. I love it!
