Sonder – messy_symmetry

Why did you pick you pick this picture?

I picked this picture, because I adored the meaning behind this word—“sonder” is one’s realization that everyone has a life as vivid and complex as one’s own—the word really depicts how none of us are alone in this world, and how we should acknowledge that everyone goes through similar hardships, struggles, and barriers in life to progress and survive.

Where did the idea come from?

Other than the theme, I really liked how I used one of Vivienne Westwood’s (she is my idol) fashion models as an element of the illustration. The complicated and vivid patterns, the jewellery, the bag, cup, and pink hair—they represent the superficial masks that people put on every day to hide their struggles to seem “normal” to others. The way the model turns around, as if startled by something, with her hair whipping in front of her face and her right arm stretched out, shows “sonder”.
Why does this picture mean so my how you?

This artwork means a lot to me because it reminds me that the people around me are struggling as well, which then in turn encourages me to not judge others by their appearance or demeanor, as they are living a life that is just as complex as mine. It is also empowering in a way that it reminds me that I’m not alone in this world.
What can you tell us about yourself?

I am 16 years old, and I became interested in art when I was very young. As a child I thought art was only about perfection and realism—having the ability to copy an object directly onto paper. But as I grew up I began to think that art is a form of expression, and that there is really no wrong answer to art, which attracted me towards abstract art as well.
What more can you tell us about your art?

I don’t really have an art style, because I love trying new things and testing out different styles. I love all forms of art. My styles range from cute doodles to realistic graphite sketches—if I were to pick a favorite medium, I’d have to go with watercolor!
