After dark – giusanta79

Why did you pick this picture?
We have been experiencing years of crisis, a sequence of endless cutbacks and without any thought to its aftermath. A period in which injustice and precariousness have emerged as almost defining characteristics of a generation for which the economic crisis has crushed most of its hopes and expectations. The photography “Rebirth” represents the hope of those living the tragedy of this historical period.

Where did the idea come from?

My work starts with deep reflection on a concept. Each of my photos guides me down a path of discovery. In this arduous and contradictory journey of fullness and emptiness, photography like poetry unveils by hiding and suggests by not revealing. On the one hand, it traces out a path and on the other underlines the impossible.

Why does this picture mean so much to you?

Over the last few years, death has unexpectadly entered my life, changing the way I see things. This photograph is part of new series called After dark. After Dark is a diary of images that tries to face the fears, doubts and emotions of this period of anxiety. Photography, throughout this journey, has represented for me a certain stability to help fight against emotional breakdown and analyze my current state of being.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I grew up in Italy. I received a B.A and a M.A in Law before focusing on photography. I studied Photography at the Antonio Failde School of Art and Design (AESD) in Ourense (Spain) and obtained an International Master’s in Conceptual and Artistic Photography at the School of Photography and Center for Imaging (EFTI) in Madrid. Since then I have been working during 4 years in a long term project that gave me the opportunity to live in different parts of the world (Korea, Japon, USA and Poland) and continue with the dream of living with my art.

What more can you tell us about your art?

I believe that my work can be described as philosophical research. My work deals with existential issues such as vulnerability, the transience of life, and the body as a metaphor for the solitary, metaphysical quest of the soul. Stretching the limits of the physical body, I revise the confines of perception and create a hybrid form that is a reflection of the mystery of the human condition.
