Why did you pick this picture?
I selected this photograph becuase the creation process embodied the spirit that you should never wait for perfection. I had not planned to shoot thisphotograph that day. I was meeting up with some friends later that day to watch some bluegrass music. To kill the time I did some research on what arches
where were as I planned to go shooting another night. Delicate Arch was the arch most people would be familiar with seeing so that’s the one I targeted.
Unable to finish my research before meeting up with my friends I was unsure if it was wise for me to walk out to the Arches after dark, alone.
The trail is over rock most of the way so there is no “trail” to follow. It’s easy during the day, just follow the stream of people. At night, I heard it was deserted. Just you and the wild. I was also told by my friends that there are several drop offs along the way that you must walk on the edge of. During my research I also read a few stories of photographers dying while trying to photograph the Arch.
Would it be stupid of me to go out and try this with out first seeing the lay of the land in the light of the day? The desire to shoot the arch was strong. I sat and mulled it over while watching the bluegrass show which was quite entertaining. Once the show came to an end I looked up at the sky and saw not a single cloud. At that moment I knew I was going for it. Life is short and I am here now. It’s time to adventure.
To summarize, had I waited for everything to be perfect, this shot might not have happened. Sometimes, even when unprepeared or inexperienced, magic can happen. Never pass up an opportunity.
Where did the idea come from?
I’ve always been fascinated with the night sky and our universe. When I was young I’d spend a lot of time at my grandparents ranch where the sky was dark. I would be so amazed at how many stars I could see at night. When I was back home in the city I was lucky to see a handful. I remember endless nights laying in the cold grass field, on my back, getting lost in the sky. As my photography interest and skills grew it was only natural that I start to photograph the night sky.
Why does it mean so much to you?
It’s something precious. There are so many places in this world where you can not see the night sky. I think it’s crucial as a species that we stay connected with our place in this universe.
What can you tell us about yourself?
I’m homeless and live in a 25 year old van. I travel around the country exploring our national parks, forests, BLM, and what ever I can get into. I’ve been photographing off and on for the last 4 years, however, only 2016 have I become more serious about my craft.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I hope my work will inspire people to take a pause and appreciate the experiences of life. To get outside and marvel at the world around us and to gain perspective on what is really important in life

Last night I sat in awe and amazement at the beauty of our universe. I had it all to myself. A great deal of time was spent reflecting on what is really important in life. Technically there are issues with the photo, but, hell, who cares! Just look at that scenery. #milkyway #astrophotography #nightsky #delicatearch #archesnationalpark #desert #arches #summer #nightlife #stars #photodaily #photo #followforfollow #followme #becoming #nature #vanlife #vandwellers #vandweller
