Why did you pick this picture?
This Watercolor was commissioned for an exhibition curated by a LGBT association from my City (Cagliari, Italy).
It represents a lot of me: my commitment to the cause, and my inclination to take pop icons and deconstruct their context.
Where did the idea for this art come from?
The original subject was Harvey Milk’s campaing to support LGBT rights in San Francisco. He’s famous fo his motto: “My name’s Harvey Milk, and I’m here to recruit you”.
I started from there, and imagined him recruiting famous pop icons from the movies, to create unconventional love relationship, from Sam and Frodo to King Kong and Godzilla.
What does this art mean to you?
It means a lot, because I really believe in the LGBT cause. I’m very connected to the local community, which is awesome. I am heterosexual, but I really believe that taking part to the cause is a matter of being a good citizen and a member of the community. Everybody should do what they can to be supportive towards the people around them. It is the only possible way to create a healthy environment for anyone.
What can you tell us about yourself?
My name’s Riccardo Atzeni, I’m an illustrator and cartoonist from the island of Sardinia, in the middle of the mediterranean sea. My time is split between watercolors and animation. I am currently working on a short animated movie.
What more can you tell us about your art?
I love to take famous characters (superheroes, movie characters), and change their meaning, or put them out of context. It is always a surprise to discover what happen once you do that. What happens when you put a superhero in a ordinary context, like taking a shower? What happens to the icon then? It is like discovering new meanings and possibilities.
