Shedding light – stacybeeart

Why did you pick this picture?

I feel this piece represents my art well in terms of the media and techniques I use when drawing as well as the surreal and symbolism I love to include in each piece.
Where did the idea come from?

I had this idea when visiting a local museum and seeing some amazing Native American works that showed the injustices they have suffered throughout the years.

Why does this picture mean so much to you?

It means so much to me because of the story it tells and I spent a lot of time adding as many details as I could. The artwork tells a story about Native Americans and their struggling relationship with America throughout the past and present, when land was promised, and when land was preserved. The image is shaped like a luna moth, which only flies in darkness, and is a contrast with the light of the transcontinental railroad that shines on the past and present as time turns. Time also reveals the light and dark the Native Americans have endured during their lives and it shows how their spirit and culture has transcended throughout.

What can you tell us about yourself?

I’m a full-time art teacher and artist from Arkansas. My husband is a copywriter and together we have two beautiful cats.

What more can you tell us about your art?

I want my work to have a vintage feel to it, much like old black and white illustrations. My favorite works I’m inspired by are prints from M.C. Escher and illustrations from John Tenniel in the Alice in Wonderland books.
